The Department of Classical & Ancient Near Eastern Studies is pleased to share two recent accomplishments of Professor Jeremy M. Hutton, whose scholarship continues to shape the field of biblical studies and reach audiences well beyond UW-Madison.
At the most recent meeting of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament, Professor Hutton was named Editor-in-Chief of Vetus Testamentum, the organization’s flagship journal. Founded in 1951, Vetus Testamentum is one of the leading international publications dedicated to research on the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. As Editor-in-Chief, Professor Hutton will help guide the journal’s scholarly direction and uphold its reputation for publishing high-quality, field-defining research.
In addition to this significant appointment, Professor Hutton recently published a new essay on TheTorah.com. His piece, “Israel Is a Rebellious Child; YHWH Is a Parent but Not a Person,” draws on historical linguistics, textual criticism, and literary analysis to explore Hosea 11. Hutton examines the metaphor of Israel as a child and YHWH as a parent, shedding light on how Israel’s language, identity, and relationship to YHWH can be better understood through careful attention to context and metaphor.
