First Semester Latin serves as an introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of Classical Latin. While Latin generally refers to the language spoken by the Ancient Romans, Classical Latin is the literary dialect that has been preserved in ancient texts dating from the late Republic (1st century BCE) through the early Empire (1stthrough 3rd centuries CE).
In Latin 103, we will get introduced to the basic grammar and vocabulary, and we will read sentences and simple text passages from Roman authors who wrote in Classical Latin. While our focus is primarily on written grammar and translation, the course will also touch on aspects of Roman culture, history, and literature.
