General language/literature examinations, or “Generals,” in both languages, are based on the following:
- Two semesters’ worth of reading from 500-level classes or the equivalent.
- In conjunction with each class, independent preparation, in consultation with the Instructor of Record (IOR) for the class and the Director of Graduate Studies, of “supplementary materials.”
Supplementary materials: For the Generals, supplementary materials are defined as at least 40 Oxford Classical Text pages per course, in the language of the class, commensurate with the difficulty of the text and the student’s level in the program, based on a combination of department reading lists, course material, instructor expertise, and/or student interest, as determined by the IOR, over the course of the semester.
