Students in this course will be introduced to the earliest, and possibly most fascinating, of extant ancient Greek literary texts, Homer’s Iliad. We will read all of Book 1 in the original Greek as well as explore Homeric society. The focus will be on a close reading of the text that stresses the rudiments of Homeric language and grammar, including dialects, vocabulary, syntax, poetic meter, and translation.
