Ralph Rosen is Vartan Gregorian Professor of the Humanities and Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. A specialist in Greek literature and intellectual history, his work focuses on ancient comedy and satire, as well as the intersections of literature and ancient medicine, particularly the traditions associated with Hippocrates and Galen.
Professor Rosen is the author and editor of numerous influential publications, including Making Mockery: The Poetics of Ancient Satire (2007), Hip Sublime: Beat Writers and the Classical Tradition (2018, with Sheila Murnaghan), Aristophanes and Politics: New Studies (2020, with Helene P. Foley), and The Oxford Handbook of Galen (2024, with P. N. Singer). His ongoing research continues to explore key figures and traditions in Greek comedy and ancient medicine.
At Penn, he is Co-founder and former Director of the Center for Ancient Studies and has held several leadership roles, including Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences. He has also served as President of the Society for Ancient Medicine and Pharmacy and of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.
