This course studies the religions of the Greeks and Romans, including the development of Christianity. We explore religious beliefs and practices in their social and historical contexts. Topics include the relationship between religion and mythological literature, the importance of oracles and centralized worship, religious practice in daily life, and how religion supported the Greek and Roman political systems. Background readings come from textbooks, scholarly essays, and ancient sources.
