A survey of the history, literature, art, and culture of the ancient Romans, beginning with the legendary founders Aeneas and Romulus and ending with Constantine’s Christianization of the Roman empire. The course will emphasize primary sources and pivotal historical figures such as Julius Caesar and Augustus, with consideration of such topics as religion, politics, the lives of women, and the architecture of the eternal city.
