This course explores legacy of Greek and Roman antiquity in contemporary media, from the popular (video games and comics) to the scholarly (political ideologies) and from the uplifting (queer and feminist retellings) to the problematic (white supremacy and fascist appropriations). Students will be introduced to key figures, ideas, and narratives of the ancient world through primary source texts, material culture, and contemporary scholarship and then explore how these ancient objects are represented, reflected, retold, and reinterpreted in contemporary contexts.
