This course investigates the myths of ancient Greece and Rome from the earliest epic reflections on life, the universe, and everything to the latest Roman remakes and the Christian critiques of “Pagan” craziness. In addition to studying the major cycles of ancient myth (from Zeus to Helen of Troy and Oedipus), students will also study some moderns interpretations too (from Freudians to science fiction and feminism). The course will meet for 8 weeks and entail weekly lectures and podcasts, reflection pieces (2-3 pp. every two weeks), weekly group work (online), one required writing assignment (5-7 pp.), one midterm examination, and a variety of options for the final project (exam, writing assignment, podcast, or creative project).
