In this course we examine the culture, society, literature, and learning of the ancient Greeks. We follow their history for over two millennia, from the time of legendary heroes such as Heracles and Achilles, through the Classical and Roman periods, and into the medieval world of Byzantium. We study their philosophy, religion, politics, and warfare, but also their daily lives, entertainments, emotions, and idiosyncrasies. Throughout it all, the Greeks will speak for themselves through their texts (read in translation), art, and architecture. This course satisfies the Communication B requirement.
