The gods, heroes, anti-heroes, and monsters of Greco-Roman myth saturate our popular culture– from explicit retellings such as the novels of Madeline Miller, the Percy Jackson books, Lore Olympus, and Netflix’s Kaos, to more subtle engagements such as Beyoncé’s self-portrayal as Venus. In this honors course, we study the original literature and art that comprises Greco-Roman mythology, learning how to interpret and critique references to classical myth as you encounter them in the world. This course emphasizes personal engagement with the myths, including creative projects and self-reflective essays. Students attend two discussion sections per week.
