Teraun Nordman-Riley Awarded Gertrude E. Slaughter Summer Study Scholarship

The Department of Classical & Ancient Near Eastern Studies is pleased to announce that Teraun Nordman-Riley has been awarded the Gertrude E. Slaughter Summer Study Scholarship, which supports undergraduate students pursuing advanced study, study abroad opportunities, and archaeological or field-based learning experiences in the ancient world.

The award will support Nordman-Riley’s participation in the Classics Program’s study abroad course in Italy. Led by Andrea Samz-Pustol, the program focuses on the history, archaeology, and cultural legacy of ancient Rome and Pompeii through immersive, site-based learning.

Currently studying Latin and pursuing coursework in Classical Studies, Nordman-Riley developed a growing interest in the ancient world through encounters with Latin literature and its enduring influence across literary and intellectual traditions. Reflecting on his academic journey, Nordman-Riley noted that “it was not until I had continuously ran into Latin in my texts that I began to grasp the incredible reach of Latin.” His studies have inspired a deeper engagement with Roman history, language, and culture, as well as plans to continue advanced coursework in Classics and potentially pursue a major in Classical Humanities.

For Nordman-Riley, the opportunity to study in Italy represents a uniquely meaningful way to engage with the ancient world firsthand. “I can not think of a more efficient way to learn about the history of a place than to engross oneself in that culture, both physically and mentally,” he wrote. By experiencing the historical landscapes, architecture, and cultural sites connected to his studies, he hopes to deepen both his academic understanding and his appreciation for the lasting impact of classical antiquity.

The department congratulates Teraun Nordman-Riley on this well-deserved award and looks forward to supporting his continued studies in Classics.
