The Opportunity
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during the spring semester of 2020 eclipsed the Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies (CANES) Department’s normal fundraising opportunity, the Day of the Badger. The University is therefore allowing departments to participate in the annual Fill the Hill campaign (uwflamingos.com). The site will go live beginning Monday, Oct. 19th, and donors may begin submitting gifts on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 11:00am. Throughout the campaign (lasting until Friday, Oct. 23, 6:00 pm) alumni, supporters, and friends will be able to navigate to the CANES Department’s giving tile (using the search function) and donate directly to the Department’s annual discretionary fund.
Why we need your support
The CANES Department is dedicated to the study of classical antiquity in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. We are foundational to the university’s mission of rigorous and interdisciplinary training in the humanities. Our undergraduates are teaching in Wisconsin schools. Others are admitted to top programs for graduate study across the nation. Our doctoral students earn tenure-track positions at renowned colleges and universities. Gifts to CANES support our commitment to broaden the reach of our teaching and research and include diverse scholars and students in the future of our discipline.
How gifts make a difference
Our department needs your help to offset the cost of undergraduate and graduate education for students in our programs, and to attract students from historically under-represented groups to our field. We need financial support to recruit top talent to our graduate program and for students in our programs seeking research experiences in classical lands. We need support for development of a distinguished alumni lecture series to celebrate the achievements of our alumni by bringing their expertise and experience back to campus to share with our current students. Please help support us in achieving these goals.
