Language Institute Interviews Alice Mandell

According to Alice Mandell, learning ancient languages gives a person, “… a sense that you are being teleported into the past. You can access stories about the gods as well as the personal letters, prayers, hopes and dreams of ancient people… It gives voice to people who would otherwise be forgotten.”

In her interview with UW’s Language Institute, Mandell discusses the languages offered in CANES – Akkadian, Hebrew, Canaanite dialects, Ugaritic (a Late Bronze Age language), Aramaic, Greek and Latin – and provides a wonderful overview of the Department, her background in language study, and its impact on her work.
