Classics 102 examines the influence of Greco-Roman literature on contemporary popular culture, pairing classical texts, myths, and philosophical works with modern media such as films, shows, books, songs, and music videos. Students will both use modern media to understand the ancient past and apply insights from the past to critically engage with the present—from Homer and Sappho to Disney and pop music. In developing their proficiency as readers of ancient literature, students will explore themes such as justice and heroism, erotic love, politics and violence, and the nature of comedy. Practical applications of literary analysis, rhetorical techniques, and philosophical concepts will extend to ancient and modern works alike, including interactive activities using university-licensed films. Students will also gain skills in applying textual methods to non-textual material and in peer-to-peer teaching within this hybrid course format.
