Classics 102 (Section 3): Witches, Bandits, Cultists, and Slaves: Ancient Rome Beyond Emperors and Gladiators

Uncover the untold stories of ancient Roman society.

Do you ever wonder if there’s more to the Roman empire than emperors, battles, and gladiators? This course looks at those on the margins of the empire– witches, bandits, members of mystery cults, enslaved people, and more. Our main source will be “The Golden Ass,” the only surviving, complete Roman novel, complemented with poems, letters, religious inscriptions, and magical spells and curses from real ancient Romans. Students will analyze the primary sources material through written reflections and creative projects. For a final assessment students will have the choice between an academic essay or a podcast.
