As a survey of Latin writing of the “middle ages” (ca. 750-1450 CE?), this course combines some late antique but mainly “properly” Medieval Latin writing, first in chronological and geographical and then topical arrangement. For the second, the topics include categories that can arguably assumed their first modern form (in contrast with Greco-Roman antiquity) in the period in question: namely, gender, race, and class. In addition to narrowly focused interpretive scholarship on these issues, reading will also include more general scholarly resources for textual approaches to the writing of the period, incl. linguistics, literary history, and MS studies.
