Abstract: Ancient Greek choruses were deeply involved in all matters political: diplomacy, self-governance, ruler cults, and creation of civic identity, among others. Though their role in communal politics has been most extensively studied in the case of classical Athens, the democratic character of Athenian chorality is often taken at face value. This talk traces different ways in which chorality could contribute to local politics from the 5^th to the 1^st c. BCE, as well as the academic reception of those developments, which castigated songs performed in political systems that were not self-proclaimed democracies.
