Latin 401: Readings in Latin Literature

This course is an introduction to Latin prose and poetry of the Roman Republic through close, precise reading of Cicero’s Somnium Scipionis and a selection of Catullus’ Carmina in their historical and cultural context.

By in-class exercises, occasional quizzes, and homework assignments, students will build their grammar and vocabulary, hone their Latin translation and analytical skills, and develop their fluency in reading Latin texts in preparation for more advanced courses.

The readings of the Latin originals and student presentations will accompany frequent and lively class discussions.
